Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Zanzibar

Diving & Snorkeling

The Indian Ocean off Africa’s tropical coast has an incredible variety and quality of marine life. There are manta rays and whale sharks, five species of turtle, hundreds of fish species, dolphins, endless tropical coral reefs and even the occasional shy dugong.

Islands and archipelagos off Tanzania and Mozambique’s coast have a great mix of reef and deeper wall dives.

Best hotels and lodges for diving and snorkeling in Zanzibar

The Zanzibar archipelago is surrounded by coral reefs, hidden in the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Many are very beautiful, and so great places for snorkelling and diving – but here we aim to highlight the best.

Top of our list must be the huge reef around Mnemba Island, which is vast and dwarfs the island by comparison. (Just zoom out from the satellite view of Mnemba to see what we mean!) As well as the top-end Mnemba Island Lodge itself, most of the lodges in north and north-east Zanzibar will do many of their dives here, so it’s not a quiet reef.

Very different, but equally very attractive, are the quite and relatively undiscovered reefs of the Menai Bay Conservation Area – off southwest Zanzibar. These are fairly untouched as there’s been little development, and currently there are just a few small lodges here – notably Fumba and Unguja, mentioned below.

Finally, no list would be complete without the tiny Chumbe Island which, thanks for historical protection, has some of the best coral gardens in the world. The only way to visit this is via Chumbe Island Lodge – and to preserve the reefs, only snorkelling is allowed, guided by one of the lodge team.

North of Zanzibar, Pemba Island has some excellent dives, although because of its currents, which are sometimes quite strong, we recommend it for more experienced divers.

South of Zanzibar, Mafia Island is a lovely quiet spot, with a lagoon which suits learners and newly-qualified divers, and more challenging wall dives outside the lagoon where big fish make for very exciting dives.

Blue Lagoon Zanzibar Snorkeling

Overview

One of the best snorkeling spots in Zanzibar Islands. We do the blue lagoon trip on the south East coast of Zanzibar at Michamvi village which is close to Bwejuu and Paje Beach.

Blue Lagoon Zanzibar is a snorkeler’s paradise. The corals are healthy and colorful and they can be accessed easily compared to other Snorkeling places of Zanzibar.

A variety of colorful reef fishes call this place home, such as leaf fish, mantis shrimps, Octopus, Squid, moray eels, puffer fish, scorpion fish, lionfish, nudibranch, angel fish, snappers, rainbow runners, jackfish, barracudas, batfish among others.

Another reason why Blue Lagoon Zanzibar is special and worth going is because of the highest starfish population. The high number of colored starfishes along the corals are spectacular.

During the trip, the traditional wooden boat will be used to get the best local snorkeling experience, and this is also one among the reasons most tourists love snorkeling at Zanzibar Blue Lagoon.

Swimming with Dolphins in Zanzibar

Are you looking for the best place to swim with wild dolphins in Zanzibar? You have come to the right place! Zanzibar is a famous Holiday destination in Africa where you can swim with dolphins.

Best Place to Swim with Dolphins in Zanzibar

Remember that, here in Zanzibar there is no special aquarium for swimming with dolphins. We only swim with wild dolphins, so we need to search for them using our boats. No one can promise 100% you will find them, but based on our experience we can promise on our tour that 90% we can find them.

Only two places we say are the best and easy to spot dolphins; at Mnemba Island and Kizimkazi beach as we mentioned above. And from these two places, we recommend Mnemba Island because you can combine it with Snorkeling, this place is considered as the best snorkeling part of Zanzibar.

Best Time to Swim with Dolphins in Zanzibar

The best season to swim with dolphins is during dry season months, also we consider this time as the high season period for tourists arrival; June, July, August, September, and October. Also, January to early march.

Dolphin types found in Zanzibar

In Zanzibar, we have more than seven types of dolphin species that you can spot during the dolphin trips.

Where to go for Dolphins Experience

Kizimkazi Dolphins Trip

Kizimkazi is a fisher’s village located on the southern part of Zanzibar Island (Unguja) about 59 km from Zanzibar city, and 99 km from North beach. Kizimkazi is famous for swimming with dolphins in Zanzibar. We recommend this tour for those travelers who are staying on the south coast like Jambiani, Paje, Michamvi, Makunduchi, because this place is near to them.

Mnemba Island Dolphins Trip

On this day trip, we will take you to Mnemba for the purpose of Swimming with dolphins only. The main difference from this tour and above tour is, here you will not do snorkeling. This is a special trip for those travelers who are not interested in Snorkeling.

Mnemba Dolphins & Snorkeling Trip

Mnemba Island is a small island located just off the northeast coast of Matemwe, opposite Muyuni Beach. The island is surrounded by a wide variety of corals which create a home for thousands of different colourful sea creatures, approximately 600 species of coral fishes, green turtles, also dolphins can be found easily from Mnemba Island. If you are lucky, you may see the Humpback whales especially during late July and August. This program is designed for those travelers who are interested in both Dolphins and snorkeling so as to give the best holiday experience.

You will first start with swimming with dolphins, and then to Snorkeling in the shallow water near Mnemba Island.
