The Indian Ocean off Africa’s tropical coast has an incredible variety and quality of marine life. There are manta rays and whale sharks, five species of turtle, hundreds of fish species, dolphins, endless tropical coral reefs and even the occasional shy dugong.
Islands and archipelagos off Tanzania and Mozambique’s coast have a great mix of reef and deeper wall dives.

The Zanzibar archipelago is surrounded by coral reefs, hidden in the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Many are very beautiful, and so great places for snorkelling and diving – but here we aim to highlight the best.
Top of our list must be the huge reef around Mnemba Island, which is vast and dwarfs the island by comparison. (Just zoom out from the satellite view of Mnemba to see what we mean!) As well as the top-end Mnemba Island Lodge itself, most of the lodges in north and north-east Zanzibar will do many of their dives here, so it’s not a quiet reef.
Very different, but equally very attractive, are the quite and relatively undiscovered reefs of the Menai Bay Conservation Area – off southwest Zanzibar. These are fairly untouched as there’s been little development, and currently there are just a few small lodges here – notably Fumba and Unguja, mentioned below.
Finally, no list would be complete without the tiny Chumbe Island which, thanks for historical protection, has some of the best coral gardens in the world. The only way to visit this is via Chumbe Island Lodge – and to preserve the reefs, only snorkelling is allowed, guided by one of the lodge team.
North of Zanzibar, Pemba Island has some excellent dives, although because of its currents, which are sometimes quite strong, we recommend it for more experienced divers.
South of Zanzibar, Mafia Island is a lovely quiet spot, with a lagoon which suits learners and newly-qualified divers, and more challenging wall dives outside the lagoon where big fish make for very exciting dives.

A variety of colorful reef fishes call this place home, such as leaf fish, mantis shrimps, Octopus, Squid, moray eels, puffer fish, scorpion fish, lionfish, nudibranch, angel fish, snappers, rainbow runners, jackfish, barracudas, batfish among others.
Another reason why Blue Lagoon Zanzibar is special and worth going is because of the highest starfish population. The high number of colored starfishes along the corals are spectacular.
During the trip, the traditional wooden boat will be used to get the best local snorkeling experience, and this is also one among the reasons most tourists love snorkeling at Zanzibar Blue Lagoon.

The best season to swim with dolphins is during dry season months, also we consider this time as the high season period for tourists arrival; June, July, August, September, and October. Also, January to early march.
